Why Choose to Shop at a Small Business

Share This:

Small businesses are a lifeline for every community. We contribute back to our own community, as well as surrounding communities. We honor timeless traditions and provide many opportunities for independent craft projects that would be lost if we let big corporations take over.

Small businesses foster creativity and originality. Small businesses provide needed experience and time-tested training for young minds to learn such skills as honesty, comradery, finance, community service, teamwork and more. Each time you support a small local business you are helping to fund a better tomorrow locally, and contributing to the building of a better life for everyone.

These Numbers Tell the Story

In a study conducted by the marketing group we belong to just a couple of years ago, they found that for every $100 dollars you and I spend in purchases between large corporations and small-town businesses that those dollars break down approximately in this way.

  • $100 dollars spent in purchasing from large corporations by consumers on average as little as $1 contributes to the local economy.
  • When that same $100 is spent at a small business, over $85 dollars remain in the community in taxes, wages and advertising. Also, the contributions aren’t just monetary. They’re in products donated, educational offerings (often at no cost to those who attend) and other purchases needed for supplies, services and our personal needs.

graphic shows how much money spent at small business remains in communityIf we look around, we find vacant buildings everywhere. They may add to the tax base but do little to show a viable, progressive community which in turn attracts companies willing to locate here and invest in our future as a community.

We find young members of our community leaving us to find jobs elsewhere. This causes these young, innovative and creative minds to grow and prosper somewhere else. This in turn breaks up and separates families.

There is seldom a day that goes by that a customer doesn’t say to Pat or me how pleased they are that we have kept the Marian Center open. There is seldom a day that goes by that we are not complimented on our store and the quality of products and services we offer.

Why is that so important you may wonder? People like being helped. They enjoy being able to relax as they shop as well as the friendly and supportive assistance we provide.

Perhaps most importantly, they appreciate the value we place on every person who walks through our door. They are never rushed, never pressured, and never treated like someone taking up our time. We treat you like we want to be treated: like a dignified person and not a coin purse.

Here’s the Bottom Line

The bottom line to all of this is frightening. Without small businesses, we will be at the mercy of monopolies. Gasoline won’t be the only thing out of control in the skyward escalation of our cost of living. I hope you will consider supporting a locally-owned small business when making your next purchase. You will be making a difference in our community.
